  • Curfew imposed in Jammu after Amarnath protester's suicide

Jammu (PTI): Curfew was on Thursday clamped in Jammu and its adjoining areas to prevent any untoward incident during a bandh called by a Hindu outfit to protest the alleged suicide by a man over the Amarnath land row.

"Curfew has been imposed in Jammu city, R S Pura, Bishanh, Bari Brahamana, Vijaypur and Miran Sahib areas as a precautionary measure in view of high tension and violent protests triggered by suicide by a youth on Wednesday," a senior police officer said.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been imposed in Kathua, Samba and Udhampur towns in Jammu region, he said, adding all police stations in the city and adjoining areas have been put on high alert.

Additional companies of CRPF were also deployed in sensitive places in Jammu city and other places. Intensified patrolling is being done in the city and on Jammu-Srinagar national highway, they said.

Reports from Udhampur, Kathua, Samba, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar, Kud, Katra, Reasi and Ramban said the bandh called by Shri Amarnath Sangrash Samiti (SASS) is being observed in all these places.

On Wednesday, a man identified as Kuldeep Kumar, who was taking part in a chain hunger strike against revocation of forest land transferred to Amarnath shrine board, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison.

Violent protests erupted later with protesters damaging vehicles, ransacking hospital and burning effigies and tyres.

The SASS has been advocating for removal of the Governor NN Vohra over surrender of SASB land to the government and return of the land to the temple board with restoration of full powers to the board.
