  • Sivdhan wins Chennai Marathon

    Chennai (PTI): Sivdhan (Army) from Rajasthan won the 42-km race as hundreds of enthusiastic Chennaiites participated in the seventh edition of 'Chennai Marathon' here on Sunday.

    Bibul Sugariya from Hyderabad (2h:34m:08sec) and Nagendra Rao (Army-Chennai--2h:34m:48 sec) came second and third respectively. The winner and runner-up bagged Rs five lakh and one lakh respectively, while Rao received Rs 50,000.

    Officials said 58 persons completed the full marathon. In the women's 21.2 km marathon, Sudha Singh (UP) came first while Suriya L (Tamil Nadu) and Kamlesh Baghel (Maharasthra) finished second and third respectively.

    From a full marathon to a corporate marathon of five km, the race was flagged off by Tamil Nadu Environment and Sports Minister TPM Mohideen Khan and Information Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi at Anna Square near the Marina beach at 6 am.

    Well-known sports personalities like Anju George, Shiny Wilson, former India hockey skipper V Baskaran, Tamil actor Srikanth participated in the marathon. The event was organised by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT). More than 14,000 people, including some from abroad, took part in the event, SDAT officials said.

    SDAT officials said this year about 1,500 persons from the district level, both men and women, took part in different categories. Elaborate security measures had been made for the event, they added.

    Other results:Half Marathon for men (22.1 km): Ravi Kanth (Karnataka), Irappa (Tamil Nadu), BC Thilack (Tamil Nadu).

    Mini Marathon for men (10 km): G Lakshmanan (Tamil Nadu), M Rajesh, P Paneer Selvam (both Tamil Nadu).
