  • We are going by understanding with AIADMK: CPI(M)

New Delhi (PTI): As AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa woos the Congress for the Lok Sabha polls, the CPI(M) on Friday said it was going by the seat adjustment understanding between her and General Secretary Prakash Karat in Tamil Nadu.

"As far as we are concerned, we are going by the understanding between our General Secretary and her on the question of seat adjustment for the coming Lok Sabha elections," CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury told reporters here.

Replying to a question if his party would accept a front led by Jayalalitha which is joined by the Congress, he merely said "let us see what happens. But we have an understanding with the AIADMK and we are going by that."

Wooing the Congress and aimed at driving a wedge in the rival camp, Jayalalithaa said on Thursday that the Congress should dump the DMK and dismiss the Karunanidhi government in Tamil Nadu. Observing that the DMK was caught in the "quicksand" and those who joined it would also get caught, she had said "those who come with us will gain and those who will not, will lose."

To a question on intelligence perceptions on threats to some leaders, including those from the Left, Yechury said if that was so, then steps should be taken to provide security because "during election time, you cannot expect them not to go out to campaign."
