62 per cent votes cast in Manipur
Imphal (PTI): About 62 per cent of 8.02 lakh voters exercised their franchise in an incident-free second phase of Lok Sabha elections for the prestigious Inner Manipur constituency on Wednesday.
Election office sources said Thoubal district recorded a turnout of 70 per cent, followed by 66 per cent in Bishenpur, 50 per cent in Imphal east and Imphal west districts each.
Lilong area of Thoubal district which had a considerable number of Muslim voters recorded a turn out of 63 per cent, the sources said.
No untoward incident was reported from any part of the valley during the polls which began at 7 am and ended at 4 pm, the sources said adding that, all election material would be deposited at respective district headquarters (valley districts) this evening.
Although there are seven candidates, the main contest was between M. Nara of CPI, Th Chaoba of Manipur People's Party and T Meinya of Congress. The other candidates are W Nipamacha of BJP, A. Rehaman (independent), N. Homendra (independent) and lone woman candidate L Khetrani of Bahujan Samaj Party.
