Pak facing largest refugee crisis since partition: Gilani
Islamabad (PTI): Describing the exodus of the displaced people from the Taliban-infested northwest as "unprecedented," Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday said this was the largest refugee crisis witnessed by Pakistan since partition.
He stated this in the National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament, during a debate on military operations against the Taliban in Buner, Dir and Swat districts.
Authorities and aid agencies have said that over a million people have been displaced by the fighting. The military has claimed it has killed over 760 militants and lost over 35 security personnel in the operations in the restive northwest.
Mr. Gilani also said his government is streamlining efforts to provide relief to the people who had been displaced by the fighting in the northwest.
The Pakistan Prime Minister has pledged to continue the drive against the militants till the writ of his government is restored in areas held by the Taliban.
