Andaman tsunami loss put at Rs 1000 cr.

Nagercoil, Jan. 2. (PTI): The tsunami has caused a total loss of property worth about Rs 1000 crores in the Andaman and Nicobar islands and the damage caused to the port alone would come to Rs 200 crores, Union Shipping Minister T R Baalu said today.

In Tamil Nadu, Chennai port suffered a loss to the tune of Rs 12 crores and the light house Rs 4 crores. "Total damage to port and highways is being estimated," he told reporters here.

He alleged the Tamil Nadu Government had not informed the Centre about the total loss so far, though the Centre was ready to give enough funds for the purpose and described the progress of relief works as "tardy."
