I am not in politics of position: Rahul Gandhi
Kanpur, April. 4 (PTI): With the Congress pinning its hopes on him in the Uttar Pradesh elections, Rahul Gandhi today said he was not in a politics of position and indicated that he would work on building the party by encouraging the youth to join it.
"I am not in the politics of position. I am here to allow youngsters to come forward and work for change," Gandhi told reporters when asked about he being the future prime ministerial candidate of the party.
Admitting there were problems that plagued his party, Gandhi said, some organisational troubles in Uttar Pradesh were preventing people from joining the party.
"The problem in Uttar Pradesh Congress is more organisational and I believe that at a certain point we stop people coming to (join) the party," he said.
Asked about the Congress' failure to cobble up a pre-poll coalition in Uttar Pradesh, he said "it was due to differences over number of seats."
The Amethi MP said the state had been divided over caste and religion during the past 15 years of non-Congress rule, he said there was a need for unification and "the Congress party can do it best."
Traversing the region considered to be a stronghold of the ruling-Samajwadi Party, Gandhi said the translation of the crowd gathering for his rallies into Congress voters was a long-term process.
"It has two elements to it. First is the involvement of the youth and the new mindset which would bring in new ideas for development."
"The second is, I think in Uttar Pradesh there has been too much of division. There is a need for unification and Congress party can do it best," he said.
He also sought to dismiss references to Uttar Pradesh as "Mulayam's land". "This is no one's land," he said.
Taking a dig at the other parties in the electoral fray in the state he said "unlike others, the notion of vindictive politics does not interest me."
