New Delhi, April. 15 (PTI): High on the terrorist hit-list, the capital's swanky metro rail service, that ferries over five-lakh passengers daily, got security cover from the elite Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) today.

The CISF, that protects sensitive installations like airports and nuclear-power plants, took over charge of the metro-rail security from the Delhi police at an impressive function at the Central Park attended by chiefs of the two security agencies.

The CISF would deploy as many as 1,633 armed personnel and install hi-tech gadgets like state-of-the-art explosive detectors, X-ray baggage scanners and cameras to secure the mass-transit system.

The personnel, who will maintain vigil at 59 stations of the metro spread over a length of 65.1 km, have been given special training in anti-terrorist operations, anti-sabotage checks, suspect surveillance and safety and disaster management.

"Our focus will be an unobtrusive security system," CISF Director General R K Das told reporters here.

He said the personnel do not wish to hassle passengers but will make no compromises on security.

The Delhi metro, the second of its kind in the country after Kolkata, has been placed under high security following intelligence reports about possible terrorist attacks.
