Sweden to be positive on India's civil nuke needs

New Delhi, May 4 (PTI): Sweden, member of Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), today promised a positive approach towards India's needs for civil nuclear energy, saying it understands New Delhi's requirements.

The issue came up during talks here between External Affairs Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, and visiting Swedish Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt, on a wide range of bilateral and other matters of mutual interest.

The Indo-US negotiations on the civil nuclear cooperation agreement came up for discussion in the context of India's desire to increase and diversify its sources of energy so that it can continue to grow at 9-10 per cent, External Affairs Ministry spokesman, Navtej Sarna, told reporters here.

Sweden said they are "watching" the negotiations between India and the US and would be taking their decisions after that.

"They (Sweden) understand and they appreciate India's concerns and needs for energy and he assured the External Affairs of a positive approach," Sarna said.

Mukherjee and Bildt also discussed the issue of UN reforms and the Swedish Foreign Minister observed that no country would have a claim as strong as that of India for the permanent membership of the Security Council whenever expansion takes place.

Bildt underlined the need for UN reforms, saying that the world of today is very different from that of 1945.

Bildt also met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations.
