Convergence can lead to smart devices : Kalam

Kharagpur (WB), May. 17 (PTI): The convergence of computers, communication and sensing in smart devices and the ability to have mobile communications between them was leading research and development in the key area of sensor networks, President A P J Abdul Kalam said today.

"This research is revolutionising our monitoring systems, be it in the area of environment and pollution control, be it in the area of agriculture for crop health monitoring or be it in the area of surveillance," he said.

"The sensor networks are finding newer applications. This is another convergence of functions that will be very important in our future systems."

With this background of convergence of technologies, Kalam listed some nanoscience and technology products in which India had made progress, like nano-tube filter water purification, power and drug delivery systems.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone of the Dr B C Roy multi-speciality medical research centre at the School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT-Kharagpur.
