Mukherjee to visit Ethiopia tomorrow
New Delhi, July. 2 (PTI): India's efforts to boost ties with Africa are expected to get a major push when External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee travels to Ethiopia tomorrow on a four-day visit during which the two sides will sign a number of agreements.
The visit will also provide an opportunity for exchange of views between India and African Union (AU) on the UN reforms.
Mukherjee will meet African Union Commission Chairperson Alpha Oumar Konare in the backdrop of New Delhi's interest to have support from the 53-nation bloc for its bid for permanent membership of the expanded Security Council.
Undertaking his first visit to Africa after taking charge of the foreign ministry last year, Mukherjee will seek to energise bilateral relations between India and Ethiopia, particularly in trade and economic fields.
He will hold wide-ranging talks with his Ethiopan counterpart Seyoum Mesfin.
The two sides will sign a Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPA) to improve the economic ties besides inking a pact for establishing a Joint Ministerial Commission and a protocol on foreign office consultations.
