Cooking fuels in India cheapest in entire South Asia

New Delhi (PTI): Cooking fuels kerosene and LPG are priced the lowest in India in the entire South Asia with small and less prosperous nations like Nepal and Bangladesh charging a rate closer to market price.

PDS kerosene price of Rs 9.09 a litre in Delhi is lower than Rs 30.89 per litre charged for the cooking fuel in Nepal and Rs 22.91 a litre in Bangladesh, according to latest data.

Pakistan sells kerosene to its masses at Rs 22.81 a litre and Sri Lanka at Rs 24.10 per litre.

Domestic cooking gas (LPG) too is sold at artificially lower rates of Rs 294.75 per 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi as compared to Rs 663.68 per cylinder in Nepal and Rs 390.39 in Bangladesh.

However, petrol and diesel are priced at rates that are the second highest in the region. Petrol in Delhi at Rs 43.52 per litre is second only to Nepal's Rs 44.34 a litre and diesel at Rs 30.18 is marginally lower than Rs 33.94 a litre in the Himalayan nation.

Even as India grapples with the problem of rising international oil prices on which it is 73 per cent dependent to meet its energy needs, China on Thursday raised fuel prices by about 10 per cent.
