West Bengal is bastion of communal harmony: Karat

Kolkata (PTI): CPI(M) on Thursday pilloried critics and intellectuals for comparing Nandigram with the Godhra carnage.

"There has been an attempt, including by some intellectuals to equate communal fascism witnessed in Gujarat under the Narendra Modi regime with Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's handling of the Nandigram situation," CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told a meeting on the 15th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition.

These people do not understand the elementary face of fascism, he added.

"West Bengal is the bastion of communal harmony. Those who are comparing the communal fascism pursued by Modi in Gujarat with the Left are enemies of the country and society," Karat said.

The CPI(M) leader said, in Gujarat the government had failed to protect the right of the Muslims and backward sections of the society.

The West Bengal government, on the other hand, was committed to protect the rights of the people, Karat said.
