US team discusses nuclear cooperation with Indian cos.

Mumbai (PTI): Anticipating that the Indo-US deal will come through, a delegation of American energy firms are here on a two-day visit for the second time this year to explore possiblities of joint ventures with Indian companies.

"There are constraints and lack of supply chain in the global energy sector as the Western countries did not expand their nuclear programme for the last two decades. In this backdrop, the US is looking forward to collaboration with Indian manufacturers to improve the global supply chain," a top official of an Indian company said.

It has been estimated that the current supply chain for the global power industry would not be sufficient for strong growth in the sector, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) Chairman and Managing Director S K Jain told PTI.

The role of Indian industry has been well recognised in the global nuclear trade, he said.

The delegation held half-a-day meeting with officials of Indian companies at the NPCIL premises at Anushakti Nagar here today, he said.

"We are expecting fusion of Western technologies and competitiveness of a matured Indian nuclear industry. This marriage would turn India into a competitive global player," Jain remarked.

Several countries like China, Russia and US are entering in this business in a big, and in order to avoid mismatch between the programme and supply chain, efforts will be made to forge joint ventures, he said.

The US delegation declined to talk to the media. The delegation met Finance Minister P Chidambaram and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday in New Delhi, according to sources.
