Boy sentenced to life for murdering school mate
New Delhi, (PTI): Taking a grim view of students resorting to crime as witnessed in the recent shooting in a Gurgaon school, a court here on Monday sentenced a youth to life imprisonment for murdering his school mate two years ago.
"These days incidents of involvement of school children in crime are galore. Parents never send their children to school or college with an idea that they indulge in crime. It is time for parents to ponder over as to how much time do they contribute or spare in inculcating more values to their children," Additional Sessions Judge, Narinder Kumar, said.
The court awarded life term to Anil Kumar, who as an 18-year-old class VIII student, had killed his school mate, Ujala, in broad-daylight on July 27, 2005 in West Delhi allegedly due to bullying by the victim.
"In view of the involvement of school children in crime, everyone concerned is put to thinking as to whether our education system is helping us in inculcating virtues or in simply learning as to how to succeed in taking admission in colleges, and then to get successfully employed or get engaged in one business or the other," the court observed.
The prosecution examined 20 witnesses in the case including the testimony of a carpenter, whose sharp-edged weapon had been used by the convict to cause injuries to the deceased, the then class IX student of Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya, Madipur.
Anil, a resident of Madipur colony under Punjabi Bagh police station, was apprehended immediately after the incident by the two students, who produced him before the Vice-Principal before handing him over to police.
In its 44-page judgement, the court said "There are science labs in schools and colleges for practicals. But we have not made arrangement for any laboratory at our homes for practicals in moral values to see if our children would be able to qualify the theory of moral values taught to them, whenever put to test."
"At a time when arguments are being advanced over sex education, the need of the hour is moral education," the court added.
Rejecting the leniency plea of Kumar, the court said the convict had acted in a cruel manner while inflicting injuries and killing his school mate with a carpenter's tool.
It also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict.
