Mullaperiyar talks a forward movement: Karunanidhi
New Delhi (PTI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday said he would not call his talks with Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan on the Mullaperiyar issue a failure but a forward movement.
Karunanidhi said he had suggested to his Kerala counterpart that the Central Water Commission be asked to inspect the dam to assess the extent of seepage.
On the internal security issue, the Chief Minister said the arrest of five suspected Maoists in the state on wednesday was an indication of the seriousness the state attached to tackling terrorism and naxalism.
Karunanidhi, whose DMK party is a key ally of ruling UPA coalition at the Centre, called on alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and discussed some of the developmental projects in the state.
Accompanied by his daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, he said "no politics was discussed".
Talking to reporters, the Chief Minister said he drew the attention of Gandhi to the power shortage in the state and the steps needed to address it.
