Tripura records all-time high voter turnout
Agartala (PTI): An all-time high voter turnout was recorded in Tripura assembly polls on Saturday with over 91 percent of the total 20,35,877 voters exercising their franchise, election department sources said on Sunday.
The electors voted till 10 pm on Saturday and many electronic voting machines were yet to reach the authorities for which the exact number of votes polled was yet to be ascertained, the sources said.
In 1988 85.75% of votes were cast, in 1993 81.18%, in 1998 80.84% and in 2003 77.58%, the sources said.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Prithiviraj Chauhan told newsmen that election results would be 'historic' as it would prove communists could be ousted from power by democratic and peaceful means.
CPI(M) spokesperson Gautam Das claimed the huge turnout would not go against the incumbent government because people of the state were politically conscious.
The state also became the first state in the North-East where hundred per cent photo electoral rolls were used in Saturday's polling.
