Media should give more space to news of legislature: Somnath
Gandhinagar (PTI): The media should give more space to legislature news, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Sunday said.
"I am not saying that media does not give space to our news. But they should give more news. Parliament forms laws to govern the state, they think about the future of India," Chatterjee told reporters on the sidelines of Sansadiya Gyan Shibir here.
"Media is very important in this country as it is fourth estate of democracy. But the problem is good things are not coming out. What space national newspapers give to news of Lok Sabha. We have requested them time and again to give some more space," Chatterjee said.
Chatterjee was replying to a question on whether he agreed with the issue raised by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on the role of media in democracy.
Modi during his speech had said, "politics is driven by media and media is driven by market".
"Positive work done by legislature are not properly publicised but negatives done in the House gets wide publicity", Modi had said.
