ANOC declaration refers to Tibet as 'internal conflict'

Beijing (PTI): Olympic committees from across the world on wednesday expressed confidence that China would strive to find through dialogue and understanding a "fair and reasonable solution" to "the internal conflict", an obvious reference to Tibet which was rocked by violent anti-Beijing protests last month.

A declaration adopted at the end of the three-day meeting of the National Olympic Committees did not mention the word "Tibet" but referred to it as "the internal conflict."

Assembly of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) President Mario Vazquez Rana told reporters that the word "Tibet" was mentioned in the draft by him but was skipped after the delegates made their comments on the issue.

"It was my mistake," Rana said, adding that "the overall text is very good and is exactly the same as the original one except the word Tibet."

"The text was amended and further amended and we agreed to the final text," he said after the meeting attended by 205 committees. "I am pleased with the final version."

The declaration said that the General Assembly of ANOC declares "its confidence that the government of the People's Republic of China shall strive to find, through dialogue and understanding, a fair and reasonable solution to the internal conflict for the benefit of the Games and athletes."
