Deshpande's ashes to be taken to countries she worked in
Islamabad (PTI): Ashes of noted Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande will be taken to countries where she had worked including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka for immersion, a Pakistani peace activist said on Tuesday.
Peace activists will meet in the port city of Karachi on Friday to decide on a suitable location for immersing the ashes in the Indus river, B M Kutty, who returned to Karachi last night with some of Deshpande's ashes after attending her funeral in New Delhi, said
Deshpande, 79, died in New Delhi on Thursday. Her friends and co-workers from South Asia divided her ashes so they could be immersed in places she had worked in, including India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
The ashes, brought to Pakistan in a pot covered with a red cloth, will be immersed in the Indus.
"We are going to hold a meeting on May 9 and we are inviting people from all faiths and walks of life to decide on suitable spot for immersing the ashes. We are not in a hurry as we want to choose a spot that will be ideal for commemorating Deshpande's mission for peace," Kutty, the secretary general of the Pakistan Peace Coalition, told PTI on phone from Karachi today.
"We want to associate people from all faiths and all the people who supported Deshpande's mission in choosing a suitable location," he said.
