Nepal allows Everest climbing season to resume

KATHMANDU (AP): Nepalese mountaineering officials say the climbing season on Mount Everest can resume now that Chinese climbers have completed their Olympic torch ascent.

Tourism Ministry official Dinesh Adhikari said Friday that the hundreds of climbers at the Mount Everest base camp can now depart for higher ground.

Chinese climbers took the Olympic torch to the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit Thursday from the Tibetan side of the mountain. Climbing also had been banned on the Nepalese side to the south to prevent any anti-China protests on the mountain.

Hundreds of climbers were boxed in at the base camp waiting for the Chinese to complete their climb.
