Arjun Singh in eye of the storm

New Delhi (PTI): Senior Congress leader Arjun Singh on Saturday found himself in the eye of a storm in the wake of his potshots at the party leadership on issues of loyalty and could face uncomfortable days in the party.

A day after he stirred a hornet's nest by lamenting that evaluation of loyalty was being done in a "very limited context", Singh came under attack from partymen including his one-time supporters like Digvijay Singh and Ajit Jogi.

While Congress President Sonia Gandhi gave him a silent treatment at the convocation ceremony of the Jamia Hamdard University here, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh ignored Singh's diatribe at investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan.

"I do not want to comment. These are matters which are better to be left out," the Prime Minister said adding that the HRD Minister was "our great leader and we all respect him".

Gandhi also refused to take any questions after the Rashtrapati Bhawan function.

But, AICC sought to show its displeasure with party's Media Department Chairperson M Veerappa Moily saying it was "not appropriate" for a senior leader like Singh to make such statements.

Digvijay Singh, who considers Arjun as his "mentor", told PTI that the HRD Minister was "being unfair" by saying that consultation process in the party has "fallen in a bit of disarray".

"Arjun Singh is one of the most seasoned and experienced Congress leaders whose political wisdom the Congress," the AICC General Secretary, who is currently in Karnataka, said.
