West Bengal govt-GJM talks on June 27

Kolkata (PTI): Talks between the West Bengal government and the agitating Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), which is demanding a separate Gorkhaland, will be held on June 27 as asked for by the GJM in a communication on Monday, sources in the chief minister's secretariat said.

GJM President Bimal Gurung faxed a letter to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee suggesting a discussion on that date for which he will send a four-member delegation of senior leaders of the outfit.

The CM's secretariat sources confirming the reception of Gurung's communication said, "the chief minister will communicate his assent tomorrow."

Gurung told PTI from Darjeeling that his fax was in response to Bhattacharjee's June 18 letter inviting him for talks.

"We want tripartite talks involving the Centre and the state government. I will not be going to Kolkata for talks but sending a four-member delegation of GJM senior leaders. The team will impress on the chief minister to take steps to facilitate a tripartite talk," he said.

Gurung said another GJM delegation led by General Secretary Roshan Giri has left for Delhion Monday to hold talks on Tuesday with Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, leader of opposition L K Advani and other central leaders.

Earlier in the day, Home secretary A M Chakraborty told reporters, "let one or two rounds of bipartite talks be held first and if they fail to yield any result, tripartite talks could be held if necessary."
