Quakes of moderate intensity hit Andaman islands in 12 hours
New Delhi (PTI): Two days after two powerful earthquakes hit the Andaman and Nicobar islands, three aftershocks of moderate intensity were felt in the region, triggering panic among residents.
The quakes measuring 5.1 and 5.2 on the Richter scale shook the islands at 6:02 am and 9:45 am on Sunday, the Met Department said, adding that no tsunami warning was issued.
Another tremor, measuring 5.5 on Richter scale, was felt at the islands at 20:59 hours on Saturday night.
The epicentre of Sunday's morning's quakes was located at 11.3 and 11 degrees latitudes in the north and 91.7 and 91.3 degrees east longitudes respectively, they said.
However, the main centre of Saturday night's quake was at 11.2 degrees latitude in the north and 91.5 degrees longitude in the east.
There were no reports of any damage or casualty.
Two successive powerful earthquakes originating below the sea had rocked the islands on Friday. They measured 6.7 and 6.1 on the Richter scale.
The authorities had then also not issued any tsunami warning but had warned that there were chances of more tremors and aftershocks.
