Post 9/11, 3000 Pak nationals die in terror-related attacks

Islamabad (PTI): More than 3,000 Pakistani nationals, including 1,080 soldiers, have died in terrorism-related incidents and the war on terror since the 9/11 attacks on the US nearly seven years ago.

Over 5,000 people have been injured in terrorist attacks since Pakistan joined the war on terror. Almost 3,500 militants were killed during the same period in operations conducted by the Pakistan Army.

Pakistan faced some 81 suicide attacks since it became a frontline state in the war on terror. If incidents of sectarian violence over the past seven years are included, the death toll would be higher, The News daily reported on Saturday.

According to figures compiled from media articles, websites and official statistics provided by the spokesman of the Pakistan Army, over 3,050 Pakistanis have been killed in terrorist attacks since September 11, 2001, the report said.

The Inter-Services Public Relations chief, Maj Gen Athar Abbas, said 1,080 Pakistani soldiers had been killed in the war on terror, including those who died in the air and ground strikes by US-led forces on a Pakistani post near the Afghan border last month.

In the first half of this year alone, around 660 people have been killed in terrorist attacks, mostly in the restive North West Frontier Province and the tribal areas. Fifteen suicide attacks have occurred in the first six months of 2008.

The suicide attacks included strikes on the naval college and Federal Investigation Agency building in Lahore, an attack on a bus carrying military medical personnel in Rawalpindi and an attack on a funeral in Swat.

Militants have also blown up girls' schools in the NWFP and killed persons accused of being spies.

In the past seven years, 2007 proved to be the bloodiest with some 1,500 people killed in terrorist attacks across Pakistan. Hundreds of soldiers were abducted and about 2,000 militants were killed in the tribal belt last year.
