Women turn to internet to get rid of unwanted pregnancies

New Delhi (PTI): Women wishing to get rid of unwanted pregnancies without letting others know are increasingly turning to the Internet to find "do it yourself" medication.

Scared of social humiliation, the new generation of women are trying several websites which claim to provide easy and effective ways of terminating pregnancies.

"The Internet offers a plethora of readily available information on almost all the topics.

"Youngsters are using it for conveniently carrying out abortions in the comfort of homes without minding its severe complications," a senior gynecologist at Phoenix Hospital, Shivani Sachdev Gaur, said.

However, warning against such procedures, Gaur said the grave complications of this casual medication can vary from excessive bleeding, anaemia, infection in the tube region, septicemia (infection spreading in the blood) and even infertility in some cases.

Rachna, a media professional working in the capital, preferred consulting an abortion website rather than visiting a doctor.

She managed to get information on a seemingly "simple" process -- just pop a couple of pills in the right dose and in the right order -- of pregnancy termination, but things turned into a nightmare when severe complications came in the way.
