Karzai to visit Delhi from August 3
New Delhi (PTI): In the backdrop of the audacious attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul, the issue of security for Indian nationals and assets in Afghanistan is expected to figure prominently when Afghan President Hamid Karzai undertakes a two-day visit here from August 3.
Karzai, arriving here from Colombo after attending the two-day SAARC Summit from August 2, will hold talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on a wide range of issues, particularly focussing on India's reconstruction and developmental efforts in Afghanistan.
The two leaders are expected to discuss prominently the issue of security for Indian workers, which is a matter of concern here in view of repeated attacks by Taliban, including the deadly one on Indian embassy in Kabul earlier this month.
Karzai has blamed Pakistan's ISI for the attack, a view echoed by India.
Singh and Karzai are likely to dwell on ways to counter the threat.
After the attack on the embassy on July 7, in which India lost four nationals including a Brigadier-rank Defence Attache and a senior IFS officer, a major review of security of Indian assets and personnel was undertaken at official level.
The official-level assessment of threat and ways to deal with the situation is expected to be deliberated upon during the talks Singh will have with Karzai.
India is engaged in a large number of reconstruction projects worth 750 million dollars covering road construction, power plants, telecommunication and capacity building.
