SC seeks Centre's reply on guidelines to regulate visual media
New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court on Monday wanted to know from the Centre about the implementation of guidelines related to regulation of electronic media after it was alleged that television channels were sensationalising news.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam issued notice to the Centre asking it to respond as "to what extent the guidelines are being implemented relating to the regulation of electronic media".
The Court was informed that the Cable Television Network Regulation Act, 1995 and Rules relating to it were in place for regulating the electronic media.
The Court was hearing two petitions, including the one filed by Sant Shree Asaram Ji Ashram Trust, objecting to the reporting of incidents of deaths of three children at ashrams run by it in Ahmedabad (Gujarat) and Chhindwara (Madhya Pradesh.)
The Bench disagreed with the plea of the Trust that there was a need for general directions for regulating the electronic media.
"We will try to find out some mechanism," the Bench said when senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the Trust submitted that the electronic media should not be allowed to telecast a one-sided report.
He said the channels should verify from other side while reporting so that the version of both sides is carried in a story.
He submitted that the electronic media has tarnished the image of Asaram Bapu Ashram which has religious and charitable units across the country by reporting unverified facts about the incidents of death of children studying in schools run by the Trust.
