JERUSALEM (AP): Israeli TV stations say the army is firing artillery shells into northern Gaza for the first time during a weeklong offensive.

The reports say the artillery units are attacking targets in northern Gaza. Palestinian militants often fire rockets at Israel from the area.

The Israeli army wouldn't comment on the reports.

TV commentators said the artillery fire are a strong indication that Israel is preparing a ground attack.
