Advani calls up Prachanda over priest row

New Delhi (PTI): Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kumar Dahal on Tuesday assured BJP leader L K Advani that he will soon make an announcement in Parliament about restoring the status quo ante at Nepal's Pasupatinath temple where the removal of Indian-origin chief priest sparked a row.

Dahal's assurance came when Advani spoke to him and expressed his "distress" over the "shabby and unprovoked treatment" to Indian priests at the three-century old Hindu temple, a BJP press release said.

Terming as "undemocratic" the removal of chief priest Mahabaleswor Bhatta, Advani asked the Nepal government "to respect the sentiments of its own people as well as the verdict of its own court and hasten to restore the status quo of the temple."

"The Prime Minister of Nepal assured him (Advani) that he would make an announcement in the Nepal Parliament soon regarding the restoration of the status quo ante", the release said.

The Nepal government had earlier replaced all the Indian-origin priests at the temple with Nepali priests. However, Nepal President Ram Baran yadav had said an earlier Supreme Court judgement on the issue will be adhered to.
