Critics rap dinner menu at 10, Downing Street

London (PTI): Bereft of Indian curry, the dinner served to visitors at the 10, Downing Street has been criticised for being 'boring' despite the menu consisting of the 'best of British' food.

Regretting that Britain's love affair with Indian food was not reflected in the G-20 dinner diplomacy last night, many dissected the menu and felt that celebrity chef Jamie Oliver did not do justice to vegetarians among the guests.

Chef Yotam Ottolenghi, who runs the Ottolenghi chain of restaurants, said he would have liked to see a few subtle multicultural influences in the menu to reflect a modern UK.

In particular, he would have preferred to serve Indian vegetable curry.

He wrote: "A vegetable curry might have been a better starter for the vegetarians than the goat's cheese, which a bit of a cliche – it's what chefs do when they can't come up with something really interesting or exciting".

Many agreed with Ottolenghi that the menu was 'not terribly exciting' and according to him Oliver was limited by the need to satisfy so many people.

"Some of the foreign guests might raise an eyebrow to the idea of mint sauce with lamb, but as long as Jamie keeps it fresh and doesn't make it vinegary, like some of the shop varieties, people won't find it offensive," he wrote.
