Time for EC to show fairness, says Jaitley

Patna (PTI): It is time for the Election Commission to show its fairness while taking decision against candidates of various political parties over alleged hate speech, BJP's strategist and star campaigner Arun Jaitley said on Thursday.

"We have submitted a formal letter of complaint to the EC on Lalu Prasad's comment. It's now for the EC to take a right decision in the matter as it is a testing time for the EC to show its fairness," Mr. Jaitley said addressing a poll rally here.

The EC had filed cases of inciting communal hatred against Varun Gandhi for an anti-Muslim speech he allegedly made during an election rally at Pilibhit last month.

Though Mr. Gandhi denied making those comments, the UP police slapped the NSA against him and he is in jail now.

Later, in a rally in Kisanganj, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad has said that 'he would have crushed Mr. Varun Gandhi under a roller for the hate speech if he was the Union Home Minister'.

However, the Railway Minister, later, took a defensive stand and said that what he meant was 'roller of law'.

Mr. Jaitley on Thursday demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should sack Mr. Lalu from the cabinet for his 'roller' comment.

"Lalu is a man of such mental make up that bad governance, creating social divide and indulging in criminal offences comes naturally to him," Mr. Jaitley alleged.

He, however, parried a question that why the Nitish Government in Bihar, in which the BJP is a coalition partner, has not arrested Mr. Lalu and invoked the NSA as the Mayawati government had done with Mr. Varun.
