Irom Sharmila to be produced in court today

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI): Irom Sharmila, who has been on fast for over six years to demand the repeal of an anti-terror law in Manipur, was Thursday brought here by police to be produced in a court tomorrow in connection with a case of attempted suicide.

The 36-year-old Manipuri woman began her protest on November 5, 2000, to demand the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, which gives sweeping powers to security forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations.

She started her fast soon after security forces allegedly killed 10 people on the outskirts of Imphal.

Sharmila was arrested on charge of attempted suicide two days after she arrived in the national capital on October 4, 2006 to highlight her grievances. Subsequently, an FIR was filed against her here.

"Sharmila was brought here Thursday by a team of Delhi Police and Manipur Police personnel. She will be produced in a Delhi court today," her brother Singhajit said.

Since 2000, Sharmila has been force-fed a cocktail of vitamins, minerals, protein supplements and lentil soup through the nose with a rubber tube.

After her arrest here, she was addmitted to AIIMS on October 6 last year and kept there till mid-January this year before being shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. During her stay in Delhi, she was visited by Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi, who expressed her support for Sharmila's demands.

She was taken back to Manipur on March 4. Last week, she was awarded a prize by South Korean human rights group.
