No evidence that Salman committed the crime: his lawyers tell court
Jodhpur, Aug. 6 (PTI): Lawyers defending Bollywood Salman Khan in a blackbuck poaching case told a court here today that there is no evidence to suggest that the actor had killed the endangered species.
Arguing before the court of district and sessions judge K R Singhvi, where the actor appeared challenging his conviction and five-year jail term by a trial court here, Salman's counsel H M Saraswat said neither the Forensic Science Laboratory report supports the contention of the prosecution nor any evidence points to his offence.
All the evidence contradict each other and do not support the prosecution, he contended and added "it is beyond any common sense that all other accused of the case have been acquitted on the ground of benefit of doubt, except Salman".
Moreover, the trial court had failed to evaluate the witnesses properly and even against settled propositions of law, Saraswat argued.
He said since only eyewitness Harish Dulani was not cross examined by the defence and the court itself had declared him hostile, how his evidential value could be sole ground of the sentence against the actor.
A tense-looking Salman was present in the court during the entire three-hour argument by his counsels after which the district judge adjourned the hearing till tomorrow when the prosecution will present its submissions on the appeal filed by the film star.
