No community included in ST list since 2005: Govt
New Delhi, Aug. 21 (PTI): With demands from various communities to be included in the quota list being intensified across the country, the government today said no community had been notified as a Scheduled Tribe since 2005.
"No community has been notified as ST during 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 till date," Tribal Affairs Minister P R Kyndiah told Lok Sabha in a written reply.
The Centre had on June 15, 1999 laid down modalities for determining claims for inclusion in and exclusion from the ST lists.
"According to the approved modalities, only those proposals, which have been justified and recommended by the concerned state government, Registrar General of India and the National Commission for STs are considered for amendment of legislation," Kyndiah said.
He said that no proposal justified and recommended by the three concerned organisations is pending with his ministry.
In reply to another question, Kyndiah said there were various reasons for the poor financial condition of people living in forests and tribals, like geographical isolation, lack of connectivity, non-availability of basic amenities, lack of skills, education and awareness and absence of infrastructure and administration.
