CPI(M) demands CBI probe into 'timber scam' in J&K
Srinagar, Sept. 8 (PTI): The state unit of CPI(M) today demanded a CBI probe into the alleged timber scam, "involving huge amounts of public money."
The demand was made by CPI(M) state secretary and MLA M Tarigami in a letter to chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
"Recent controversies suggest a 'timber scam' involving huge amount of public money in the state forest and environment ministries. As the allegations are of serious nature, nothing less than a CBI probe will do," he said in the letter.
He also referred to stripping of forest and enviornment portfolios from urban development minister Qazi Mohammad Afzal and his subsequent resignation. He said the public statements made by members of the cabinet had given credence to allegations regarding import of timber by the state forest corporation.
