SC stays MP Speaker's notice against Lok Ayukta
New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Madhya Pradesh Speaker's privilege notice against the State's Lok Ayukta but rejected the plea by the Leader of the Opposition for a CBI probe into "irregularities" committed by the wife of the state chief minister.
A bench of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Raveendran stayed the notice on a petition by the Lok Ayukta Justice (retd) Ripusudan Dayal challenging the Speaker's action as being illegal, without rationale and unconstitutional.
The Speaker had issued the notice of breach of privilege against the Lok Ayukta and some of its senior officials after the Ombudsman initiated an inquiry against certain officials of the State Legislative Department for "irregularities" vis-a-vis laying of a road connecting the Assembly building worth over Rs 2 crore.
While issuing the notice the Speaker sought a para-wise reply from the Ombudsman on the ground that conduct of an inquiry against the staff of the legislative department amounted to breach of privileges.
