Politics of bloodshed can't hold up progress: Buddhadeb
Kolkata, (PTI): Under attack on acquisition of farmland for industrialization, West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, on Thursday said his government would not allow politics of bloodshed to disturb the pace of progress and vowed to preserve peace at any cost.
"Can we afford to turn our state into another Assam from where there are daily reports of violence, firing and bloodbaths? We cannot. There has to be peace in the state at any cost," Bhattacharjee told an open session of CPI(M)'s South 24 Parganas District Committee here.
Questioning the violence at Nandigram, Bhattacharjee said "why is there so much trouble at Nandigram even after we categorically announced that the chemical hub has been shifted to Nayachar?.
"I had repeatedly said that if people of Nandigram do not want it, no such project would come up there", he said asking who were responsible for so much bloodshed and loss of lives at Nandigram.
The Chief Minister said "now there are reports of Maoists at Nandigram. We have seen Naxals. Except Kanu Sanyal, there is no existence of the Naxals at present".
Asserting that he could not afford to go back in sectors of agriculture, industry and education, Bhattacharjee said "We don't want turmoil to disturb our pace of progress. Everything will go haywire if there is turmoil."
With the state experiencing violence at Nandigram and political turmoil in Darjeeling hills, the Chief Minister asked opposition parties to be clear in their political stand and advised them to fight on the basis of princples.
"Our sons and daughters will require jobs and that is why industry has to be set up," he said.
