Reply to 'pseudo-secular forces', says BJP

New Delhi (PTI): The BJP on Sunday said its resounding victory in Gujarat was a reply to "pseudo-secular forces", who it alleged kept attacking Chief Minister Narendra Modi at the drop of the hat.

The saffron party dubbed Modi as the 'man of the match' of Gujarat elections and showered praise on his leadership qualities while asserting that it was the victory of the BJP as a team.

"The victory is a fitting reply to those whose commitment to secularism is spurious," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said here in a veiled attack on the Congress and the Left parties.

"The last five years saw a consistent, planned and motivated campaign against Gujarat government in general and Narendra Modi in particular, Prasad said.

"Modi is an influential leader and we are proud of him," he said, noting that the election victory has national significance as anti-BJP parties had made Gujarat polls a national issue.

He claimed that the combination of BJP's ideology, cadre support, Modi's image as a strong leader who can deliver and his all-inclusive development agenda were the reasons for the party's good showing in the polls.

Prasad said the election results have demolished the popular perception that BJP was an urban party as it performed well in rural areas winning majority of the seats.

"The people of Gujarat has supported Modi government's all inclusive growth policy in the last five years and BJP's ideology and policy," Prasad said here.

Prasad also drew parellel between the CPI(M) and the BJP's performances in West Bengal and Gujarat and claimed that while there was "scientific rigging" in Bengal, there were no reports of intimidation of voters in Gujarat.
