Urdu version of Nilmata Purana released
Jammu (PTI): Regarded as the oldest recorded history of the Kashmir Valley in Sharda language, the Urdu version of Nilmata Purana has now hit the book stands.
Nilmata Purana, which records the history of the life of people in the Kashmir valley during the 5-8th century AD, will be a feast for Urdu lovers and scholars eager to learn about ancient Kashmir, Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Rafeeq Masoodi told PTI.
The translation has been done by 83-year-old Kashmiri Pandit poet and novelist Arjan Dev Majboor, who has more than 20 books to his credit.
After more than three years of painstaking research, Majboor, who was fighting an illness, submitted the 400-page translation of the manuscript to the academy, which sponsored the project.
"I not only translated 1,400 verses of the purana into Urdu, but also wrote a nearly 90-page introductory background about the Purana for the benefit of Urdu readers," Majboor said.
"Nilmata Purana is one of the earliest accounts of ideas and values that shaped the Kashmiri mind," he said.
