Parts of Maharashtra shiver; two dead in Akola
Nasik/Akola (PTI): Cold wave in North India has brought down the temperatures in parts of Maharashtra where two persons have died of cold.
According to sources, the deaths were reported over the last four days from Akola district where the mercury dipped to 5.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
Nasik city in North Maharashtra is in the grip of chilly weather since January 19. The lowest temperature dipped to 4.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, according to the Met office.
Over the weekend, main markets and roads in Nasik wore a deserted look as most people preferred to stay indoors.
Grape growers took special measures to prevent the fruit from weather-related damage. The city is likely to experience chilly climate for three to four days more, the sources said.
In Akola, mercury dropped to 5.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the lowest this season, local weather office said.
Of the two persons who died due to cold in Akola, one was dentified as Bakaram Sakharam Rathod (45), a resident of Anjani Khurd village, while the other was a brick kiln labourer, hospital sources said.
Of other districts in Western Vidarbha, mercury dropped to 10.5 degrees Celsius in Buldan and 13.5 in Washim.
