New Delhi (PTI): Global fast food restaurant chain MacDonald's, which has 126 outlets in India, on Friday said its sale of chicken products has not been impacted by the bird flu scare in the country.

"There is no impact on our sale of chicken burgers," McDonald's India franchisee (North and East region) Managing Director Vikram Bakshi told PTI.

About 50 per cent of McDonald's fast-food menu comprises non-vegetarian items, mainly wrapped with chicken. The popular range includes Chicken Mexican wrap and McChicken burger.

The company with over 31,000 outlets in the world has had a single restaurant in Kolkata, which, "as luck would have it, was closed because of fire some months back", Bakshi said.

Moreover, He said, McDonald's has not noticed any shift of consumers from other entirely non-vegetarian western fast-food outlets like Kentucky's Fried Chicken.

"I do not see movement of customers," said Bakshi whose company Connaught Plaza Restaurants Pvt Ltd has a joint venture with McDonald's for running India operations.

India is the only country in McDonald's global business where half its menu card reads vegetarian items, mostly with potato content.

Bakshi said there was a total segregation between vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods not only for kitchens and front-end counters but also between the staff serving them.

"One wearing red apron serves you non-vegetarian food while the staff wearing green apron is meant to serve exclusively to vegetarians."

The deadly bird flu continues in West Bengal and the scare has spread in several other states, affecting the sale of poultry products in the country.
