North India faces power cuts due to transmission snag

New Delhi (PTI): Large parts of the northern region, including Delhi and Haryana, has been facing a power crisis since morning due to frequent tripping of transmission lines in these areas.

"There has been very heavy fog last night in western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana leading to frequent tripping of transmission lines in these regions," said R P Singh Chairman and Managing Director of PowerGrid Corp, who along with other senior officials has been working at the regional load dispatch centre to restore normal power supply.

He, however, added that the transmission system in general was intact, though sporadic interruption in power supply might be felt in some areas.

This kind of problem arises when fog gets deposited in transmission lines.

PGCIL said it's priority was to make the entire transmission network functional followed by restoration of power supply in the affected areas.

Asked by when complete restoration was expected, Singh said by 1000 hrs the situation would be normal.

"We are all at work, including the Regional and State Load Dispatch Centres and assure you of our best endeavour in avoiding any crisis despite very hostile weather condition in the absence of winter rain", Singh said.
