Special tourist train to chug through Kashmir

Jammu (PTI): A special tourist train will chug through the picturesque Kashmir valley when the first rail route in the state becomes operational this June.

"The six-bogie train having specially built coaches with big glass windows and Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) engine will traverse through the 68-km Anantnag-Rajvansher route from June this year," top railway sources told PTI.

"The big glass windows of the train will aid tourists to capture the scenic beauties of the Kashmir valley," they said.

A high-level team headed by Railway Manager Satish Kumar have conducted test checks of the 68-km train track during their three-day visit to the valley from April 26 to 29.

They also reviewed security measures, operations of nine railway stations, train trials and technical faults along the first rail route in the state.

Commissioner, Railway Safety, will conduct the final trials and working condition of the stations in the first week of May, they said, adding trains are expected to run through the route in June, the sources said.

Nine railway stations had been built along the route at Anantnag, Bijbehara, Panzgam, Awantipura, Kakapura, Pampore, Srinagar, Budgam and Rajvansher.
