RSP-CPI(M) face-off spreads to new areas
Canning (WB) (PTI): Wednesday's clashes between CPI(M) and RSP supporters at Amjhara in South 24-Parganas district spread to new areas on Thursday as rival activists fought with bombs and bullets.
Bombs were exchanged between rival supporters for an hour at Kanthalberia, near Amjhara, till the police arrived and stopped the clashes that were fast turning into a major confrontation, SP Praveen Kumar said.
At nearby Manasapukur in Ghutiarisharif also supporters of the two Left Front partners freely exchanged bombs and bullets. A CPI(M) supporter was injured in the leg and in retaliation angry supporters of the party destroyed houses of five RSP supporters. RSP supporters later damaged a police vehicle accusing them of inaction.
Meanwhile, at Amjhara, Wednesday's scene of violence where four people were killed, tension still prevailed. A large police force is patrolling the area.
A vehicle carrying police reinforcement to Basanti turned over on Kolkata-Basanti road injuring five of them. They were taken to Bangur hospital for treatment.
