Sikh body sending relief supplies to Myanmar

New York (PTI): A US-based voluntary organisation of Sikhs has said that it is shipping 16 containers carrying 500 tonnes of food and medical supplies to Myanmar for the victims of cyclone Nargis.

In a statement, the United Sikhs said that two more volunteers, Devinderpal Singh and Inderjeet Singh from New Delhi, have joined its relief team in Yangon.

It said the 16 containers of food and medical supplies collected by it would be sent to Myanmar, where over 78,000 people were killed in cyclone, from Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital.

The organisation said it had opened a 'langgar' (free kitchen) on May 16 and has so far provided 15,000 hot meals to the victims.

Besides, it is continuing to distribute emergency supplies, water and shelter material in the Irrawaddy delta, it said adding its volunteers are serving hot meals to survivors in make-shift camps.
