CBI books DGP Saini for 'abduction with intent to kill'

Chandigarh (PTI): More trouble is in store for Director General of Police (DGP-Vigilance) Sumedh Singh Saini after the CBI on Friday registered a case of abduction with intent to kill and conspiracy against him and three others.

State Vigilance Bureau chief Saini, retired former Chandigarh DSP Baldev Singh Saini, Chandigarh SHO (Station House Officer) and ex-subinspector Harsahai Sharma and former subinspector now SHO Jagir Singh were booked by the CBI, agency sources said.

Saini was SSP in Chandigarh on August 29, 1991, when an unsuccessful attempt was made on his life that left him wounded and three policemen dead.

A few weeks later, police picked up Balwant Singh Multani, son of an IAS officer and an alleged suspect in the case, alongwith militant Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar and at least three others. However, barring Bhullar, their whereabouts are since unknown.

As Multani was not traceable, his father Darshan Singh Multani, now retired, moved court here which directed the CBI in October 2007 to investigate the case.

The CBI has registered the FIR under relevant sections of IPC against Saini, one retired police officer and two serving policemen among others, the sources said.
