Police`assault' on woman MLA; Maharashtra Assembly adjourned
Mumbai (PTI): The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly was adjourned for the day on Wednesday amid pandemonium by Opposition Shiv Sena-BJP members who disrupted proceedings, demanding suspension of a police officer who allegedly assaulted a woman MLA from Marathwada region.
Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil, who holds the Home portfolio, said the government was ready to transfer the police officer but the Opposition members, led by BJP group leader in the House Eknath Khadse, insisted that the policeman be suspended pending a departmental inquiry.
Anusaya Khedekar, Sena MLA from Nanded district, moved a privilege notice after the Question Hour, alleging that while participating in a demonstration against inflation at Nanded, she was manhandled by police inspector Sonawane of Sadar Bazar police station in Nanded.
"Sonawane forcibly dumped me in a vehicle. No woman police constable was there. He hurled abuses at me, caught hold of a portion of my saree and tried to strangulate me before dragging me to the police station," Khedekar said.
"I seek justice from you over the injustice meted out to me," Khedekar told Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar, who admitted the privilege move and announced that the matter would be probed by the House Privileges Committee.
However, the assurances by the Speaker and Patil failed to satisfy the opposition members, who were firm on seeking the police inspector's suspension.
