BSNL to enter into direct agreement with broadcasters
Kolkata (PTI): State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam is considering to enter into direct agreement with broadcasters to improve the acceptability of IPTV by masses.
BSNL's proposed decision has come as broadcasters are not keen to enter into any agreement with third parties for content outsourcing.
"A few television channels like Zee group of channels... broadcasters are keen for agreement with BSNL and not with any other third party and that had hindered the growth of IPTV," Calcutta Telephones CGM S K Chakravarty said on Saturday while interacting with members of the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce.
"BSNL is in the process of acquiring equipment required for download of signals and distribution. It will take another year to relaunch the IPTV with new infrastructure," Chakravarty said.
BSNL has begun this process in three cities - Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Bangalore.
At present, BSNL has signed an agreement with IOL Broadband.
Meanwhile, Chakravarty said it would sign an MoU with Compass, the association for computer industry of eastern India for promoting bundled offer for broadband with new computer.
In the bundled offer, broadband charge will be Rs 199 instead of Rs 250 home plan.
BSNL has targeted to provide 20 million broadband connctions by 2010.
