    Puducherry CM meets Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi (PTI): Amid political turmoil at home over his continuance in the top post, Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy on Saturday met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and discussed the latest political situation in the Union Territory.

Rangasamy met Gandhi at her 10, Janpath residence and held discussions for about 30 minutes.

The meeting assumes significance as it came just two days before the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) of Puducherry was to meet on Monday in the wake of revolts being raised against Rangasamy by all the five ministers of his cabinet.

The Ministers -- V Vaithyalingam, who held the CM post from 1991-1996, E Valsaraj, M O H F Shahjahan, Malladi Krishna Rao and M Kandasamy -- boycotted Cabinet meetings on August two and six accusing Rangasamy of failing to fulfill promises made to people during the 2006 Assembly polls.

"I explained to the Congress chief about the recent political developments in the Union Territory," Rangasamy told reporters after the meeting.

But, he refused to say what transpired at the parley.

Puducherry Congress unit has dispatched letters to all the MLAs asking them to be present at the meet on Monday. Three independent MLAs, who support the Rangasamy government, have also been invited.

AICC sources said the High Command has convened the CLP meet to ascertain who enjoys the majority, whether the Chief Minister or the rebel group.

Union Minister and AICC Coordinator for Puducherry Vayalar Ravi had last week summoned Rangasamy to the national capital and held discussions with him on the political situation in the Union territory. PTI ETB KKE
